GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung operates a unique large-scale accelerator for ions. Researchers from around the world use this facility for experiments which help them make fascinating discoveries concerning the building blocks of matter and the evolution of the universe. In addition, they continually develop novel applications in medicine and technology. In the coming years the new international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built at GSI.

The department “Control Systems” (ACO) presently employs about 60 hardware and software developers and is responsible for the design and implementation the control system of the existing and future FAIR accelerator facilities.

You'll join a team of software developers tasked with design and maintenance of the control software for the accelerator complex. Your focus will be on developing crucial control system components for the future FAIR facility (www.fair-center.eu). Your responsibilities will include requirements engineering, conceptualization, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.

 

You will be part of a team that primarily focuses on the development and optimization of central systems for operating and monitoring the accelerator, as well as the communication middleware of the control system.

 

Your task will be the development and maintenance of the existing Archiving System. This system plays a critical role in supporting our internal customers from operations, machine physics and research by collecting high-frequency data from hundreds of sources within the accelerator facility and presenting it in a user-friendly manner.

 

As a member of a collaborative team, you'll contribute your ideas to shaping the overall concept of our control system services. With your independent work style, you'll also serve as a point of contact for internal customers and colleagues.

 

Your passion for software development, conceptualization, and designing applications for particle accelerators makes you well-suited to tackle the challenges posed by this field.

 

What you will do:

 

  • Develop and maintain high-quality software solutions especially our archiving system using Java programming language
  • Solve difficult issues, including performance or concurrency issues, and proposing solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new features and functionalities
  • Perform unit testing and integration testing to ensure software reliability and robustness
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve issues in existing software solutions
  • Participate in on-call support for critical production systems

 

What you should bring:

 

  • Strong knowledge and multiple years of experience in Java Software Development and the Java ecosystem
  • Proficient in algorithms and data structures
  • Experience in modern software development, frameworks and deployment techniques like Spring Boot, RESTful Interfaces, Kubernetes etc.
  • Interest and first experience in developing scalable multi-node applications handling big amounts of data
  • Knowledge and experience in Python is a bonus
  • Excellent team skills, focus on a common goal as main focus
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities, ability to understand business requirements of our internal customers, explain own ideas and concepts
  • Independent work-style, ownership of products and with a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service
  • Strong writing and communication skills in German and English
