Professor (W2) for Ion Beam Modified Materials
GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerator facilities for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) facility will be built in international cooperation - one of the largest research projects worldwide. Technical University Darmstadt is an autonomous university with a broad research excellence and an interdisciplinary profile. The long-term successful cooperation of Technical University Darmstadt and GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in various research areas shall be strengthened with the focus on "Ion Beam Modifies Materials" in the Department of Materials- and Geosciences. The professorship is therefore associated with the management of the Department of Materials Research at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. The appointment to a professorship at Technical University Darmstadt will be combined with a simultaneous leave of absence to the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (so called "Jülich model").
Technische Universität Darmstadt (Technical University Darmstadt) and GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research) are jointly looking for a
Professor (W2) for Ion Beam Modified Materials
and in personal union a
Head of the Department of Materials Research at GSI Helmholtz Centre
for Heavy Ion Research
We are looking for an internationally renowned personality with proven scientific expertise in materials research with ion beams as well as leadership experience who will maintain and further develop the research field in close cooperation with German and foreign universities and research institutes. The thematic focus of materials research at GSI includes:
- Heavy ion-induced changes in a wide variety of materials from crystals to polymers to composites
- Nanotechnology with ion beams; synthesis and characterization of nanochannels and nanowires as well as further development and exploration of possible applications
- Radiation resistance of technologically relevant materials and electronics
- Stabilization of high-pressure phases by heavy ion irradiation
- Simulation of cosmic rays and astrochemistry
- Operation of the irradiation facilities for materials research at GSI and at FAIR as user platforms for internal and external groups
- Development of the research program for FAIR in the framework of the BIOMAT collaboration
Further tasks of the professorship include the supervision of PhD students as well as the design and implementation of courses in the field of materials research in the German and English-language Bachelor's and Master's programs of the Department of Materials and Geosciences at Technical University Darmstadt with a teaching load of two semester hours per week.
The call is addressed to outstanding, internationally recognized scientists with completed PhD and an exceptional track record in the fields mentioned above. Above-average commitment and experience in attracting external funding are expected. Experience in university teaching and supervision of bachelor's, master's and doctoral theses is required as well as leadership and management experience.
The position includes a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German "W-Besoldung" and is subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate.
