Postdoctoral Researcher (all genders) in Lattice Gauge Theory

The Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) is an institutional cooperation of the Johannes Gutenberg - Universität Mainz and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt. It links the academic world of a university with the scientific possibilities of an internationally renowned unique large-scale accelerator center for ions. In the coming years, the new international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built at Darmstadt.

The HIM research section Theory Floor invites outstanding candidates to apply for a

The lattice group consists of three staff members (Prof. G. von Hippel, Prof. H.B. Meyer and Prof. H. Wittig), several postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Current research topics in the group include hadron structure and spectroscopy, hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, as well as QCD spectral functions at zero and non-zero temperature. The group has access to significant local computing resources (HPC clusters) amounting to several hundred Tflops of computing power. The lattice group is embedded in the Excellence Cluster PRISMA+

Tasks:

The successful candidate is expected to

  • perform extensive investigations into the spectroscopy and structure of hadrons, hadronic resonances, as well as calculations of precision observables using lattice QCD,
  • develop simulation and analysis codes for the generation and analysis of lattice QCD data,
  • participate in the writing of publications of the lattice group,
  • present results at international conferences and workshops,
  • participate in the supervision of Bachelor, Master und PhD students.
  • participate in the writing of research proposals.

Requirements:

We expect

  • a PhD in theoretical particle physics, with special emphasis on lattice QCD,
  • comprehensive experience in Quantum Field Theory, Lattice Field Theory and Particle Phenomenology, demonstrated by an excellent publication record in these areas,
  • experience in statistical methods and the analysis of lattice QCD data,
  • excellent communication skills in English (both verbal and written).

We offer you:

a fixed-term 3-year postdoc position with the salary and benefits based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund), effective at GSI.
