Post-doctoral researcher in the ALICE experiment
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt is one of the leading particle-accelerator laboratories for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to conduct world-class science.
The GSI ALICE department is looking as soon as possible for a

for a postdoctoral research position.
ALICE (ALarge Ion Collider Experiment) is the dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of the ALICE Collaboration is to study the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities, where the formation of the phase of matter called quark-gluon plasma is expected.
The group at GSI is one of the largest teams participating in ALICE, with important roles in detector operation, physics analysis and the collaboration management.
Your Tasks:
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the analysis of ALICE data from Run 3, contributing to the group’s strong research program focused on the study of hadrons with open or hidden heavy quarks. While this is our primary focus, we remain open to considering other innovative analysis topics proposed by the candidate. In addition to current data analysis, the researcher will look toward the future of the field by conducting simulations and physics performance studies for ALICE 3. The position also offers the opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience through the supervision of PhD, Master, and Bachelor students, supporting the academic growth of the group.
Your Qualification:
- PhD in Physics or equivalent qualification
- Strong experience in data analysis in experimental heavy-ion physics, with solid knowledge of C++, ROOT, and Python
- Familiarity with the ALICE O2 software framework is an advantage
- Experience with machine learning techniques; demonstrated curiosity and openness toward exploring novel algorithms and approaches are highly valued
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
- Enthusiasm in working collaboratively within diverse and inclusive teams
A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
We offer you a position in a multi-disciplinary, dynamic, competent research group, which highly values fair and collaborative work, closely connected to the neighboring universities. The position is initially limited to a duration of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal.
Required application documents (PDF):
- Curriculum Vitae
- Short and free-form motivation/cover letter (max. 1 page), outlining expectations for the postdoctoral position, research interests, and career goals
- Compact portfolio (max. 3 pages) describing relevant skills for the position, with justification when possible
- The names of three possible references
- Your earliest possible starting date
Salary and benefits are based on the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund) effective at GSI.
GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.
Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.
