GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. The department “Control Systems” (ACO) which presently comprises about 65 hardware and software engineers on-site and collaborates with international partners and institutes, is responsible for the development, deployment and operation of the control system of the existing and future accelerator facilities.

Linux Administrator/Computer scientist (BSc/MSc/Diplom) (all Genders)

for administration and operation of our Linux server systems.

Your tasks:

• Support of the redundant (RedHat) Linux server systems of the accelerator. Installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting,
• Automation and configuration, management (puppet),
• Software evaluation, packaging and management,
• Active system monitoring, proactive troubleshooting

• Support and maintenance of storage systems (fibrechannel and software defined),
• Support and maintenance of virtualization solutions,
• Coordination and planning of the systems together with other departments,
• System and application support of the Linux servers for the SCADA systems of the accelerator,
• Technical consulting and support of the developers and users on all Linux-related aspects,

Several years of relevant work experience in the above mentioned tasks would be ideal.

Your profile:

• Complete technical or scientific graduation or comparable specialist education in the computer science field,
• Very good knowledge in the field of administration of Linux systems,
• Safe handling in dealing with IP based services (TCP/IP, LAN, DNS, DHCP, etc.),
• Good knowledge in terms of IT security,   
• Capable of acting in a structured and systematic way both independently and in a team. Good communication and client-facing skills.
• Participation in the IT on-call service,
• Ability and willingness to familiarize yourself quickly and efficiently with new topics
• Good knowledge of German and English (spoken and written),

Advantageous is knowledge regarding:

• Cluster solutions and highly available systems,
• Storage systems and virtualization solutions (OpenStack, OVirt, VMware, Ceph),
• Development environments for diskless embedded systems,
• Experience in scripting languages for administrative purposes (shell, python)
