PhD student (all genders)

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, is under construction through international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team of employees committed to world-class science.

The Nuclear Astrophysics department conducts experiments at the intersection of atomic physics, nuclear structure, and astrophysics by employing stored stable as well as radioactive beams of highly charged ions. The research is conducted at the storage rings of GSI, namely the Experimental Storage Ring ESR and the dedicated low-energy ring CRYRING. In the framework of strategic cooperation between GSI and the University of Cologne, a GSI outpost is being established at the University of Cologne. The University of Cologne, with its 10 MV Tandem accelerator in operation, offers excellent conditions for the development, construction, and testing of these detector systems before they are deployed at the GSI/FAIR storage rings.

The Nuclear Astrophysics department - department offers a position for a

to be filled as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be enrolled at the University of Cologne with the working place at GSI in Darmstadt.

The dissertation project is dedicated to the experimental search for the elusive process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC). The claim that the NEEC process was observed in an experiment at Argonne National Laboratory (USA) is highly controversial and could not be verified in independent experiments, e.g., at the Institute of Modern Physics (China). An experiment to search for NEEC using the electron cooler of GSI's experimental storage ring ESR as a free electron target has been approved and is awaiting implementation.

The reliable detection of NEEC is a challenge, and the project encompasses a wide range of tasks, including, among others:

Your tasks:

  • Design, preparation, and testing of the experimental equipment (particle detectors, ultra-high vacuum, signal electronics, DAQ)
  • Monte Carlo simulation of the reaction and decay processes in the storage ring (e.g., using GEANT4)
  • Finalization of the experiment conception in collaboration with storage ring accelerator experts
  • Conducting and organizing experimental runs
  • Data analysis (e.g., using ROOT)
  • Presentation and publication of the various stages of results

Your Profile:

  • Completed master's degree in physics or equivalent
  • Experience working with particle detectors, electronics, vacuum systems
  • knowledge of data analysis and programming in general are advantageous

We offer a unique opportunity to work in an exciting and highly-stimulating environment within the framework of world-leading scientific topics. This position provides the opportunity to work in a very diverse and interesting environment at the interface between GSI and the University of Cologne. Further knowledge can be acquired or expanded through training and continuing education opportunities.

The contract is limited for 3 years. The salary and benefits are based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund) effective at GSI.

GSI supports the professional development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.

Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.

Further Information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu.

Applications should include:

  • a detailed Curriculum Vitae
  • names of possible references

If you find this position interesting and challenging and would like to work in an exceptional, international scientifically excellent environment, please send your application documents with information of your earliest possible starting date and the posting ID 26.30-1062 by 01.04.2025at the latest via the online portal on our job site
