GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The department “Control Systems” (ACO) presently employs about 65 hardware and software developers and is responsible for the design and implementation the control system of the existing and future FAIR accelerator facilities.

You will be working in a team of Software developers that is responsible for controls software for the accelerator complex. Your will do database development for the central data basis of the control system for the future FAIR facility (www.fair-center.eu). The task comprises requirements engineering, conceptual work and design, implementation, test and maintenance.
Your main task is the maintenance and further development of the database for the settings management of the accelerator complex, which represents the underlying data of a framework for modelling accelerators that is being developed in the context of an international collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN (www.cern.ch). With your experience you will be the link between the team for the technical provision of the databases, the collaboration partners at CERN and the development team of the framework. The framework itself is composed of an institute-specific and a common part, the latter being further developed within the collaboration.
You monitor proactively the performance of the running database accesses and realize optimizations with the colleagues and in agreement with the collaboration partners. To establish the contact to the collaboration partners and build up a deeper understanding of the joint database development, you bring along the willingness to work within the CERN database group for a limited period of time.
You will work out and realize a concept for testing the performance of the database accesses. You use possibilities for atomization in a profitable way. Currently we evaluate administrating test databases using containers. You contribute to this evaluation using your special knowledge.
You will enrich the team with own ideas to the overall concept. You convince us with an independent and target-oriented way of working and act as competent contact person for internal customers as well as colleagues. You determine the requirements regarding the database based on the current and future usage scenarios in consultation with the stakeholders as basis for the setup of the future database system for FAIR. You will be supporting the commissioning and the operation of the accelerators, which includes taking part in regular on-call duty.
You are passionate for database development and optimization, and the involvement in the development of a complex control system for operating particle accelerators poses a challenge for you.
Required professional skills:
- Strong knowledge and experience in database development, the design of data models and database optimization
- Strong knowledge of the Oracle database technology
- Strong knowledge in performance measurement of the currently running database accesses and their optimization
- Strong knowledge in SQL and PL/SQL
- Good knowledge in (Spring-)JDBC and appropriate knowledge of Java
- Experience with Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) is beneficial
- Experience with further database access technologies (e.g. OR-mappers) and database versioning tools (e.g. Liquibase) is a plus
- Experience with containerization (e.g. Kubernetes) is beneficial
- Basic experience with Linux is a plus
- Very good writing and communication skills in German and English

For a successful application, you must have a successfully completed university studies attested by a degree in Master of Computer Science or comparable qualification and fulfill the required skills.

This position is permanent. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
