Design Engineer (m/f/d) for analogue/digital Electronics

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Design Engineer (m/f/d) for analogue/digital Electronics

to strengthen our Quench Detection Team.


Your tasks:

  • Design, review, and coordination of the development of digital (based on FPGAs) and analogue electronic circuit designs for our magnet quench detection system.
  • Test, upgrade and maintenance of electronic devices for quench detection.
  • Specification of the software interface to operate the quench detection hardware via the FAIR accelerator control system, technical coordination with internal divisions and external partners.
  • Preparation and technical coordination of procurement processes with internal and external partners, organization and execution of design quality reviews.
  • Participation in the planning, implementation and commissioning of quench detection systems for the new accelerator complex and our magnet test facilities.
  • Support of the test facility staff in terms of quench detection and event analysis.


Your profile:

  • Degree in electrical engineering or a related field (MSc, Diploma U/TH/TU/FH).
  • Profound knowledge in design, programming (VHDL) and simulation of FPGA-based electronics (preferably with ALTERA).
  • A varied experience in design, simulation, test and manufacturing of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
  • Know-how in merging electronic devices into large-scale electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of an EDA tool (like EAGLE, OrCAD, KiCAD) including schematics entry, layout of printed circuit boards and manufacturing transfer would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, C++) would be an asset.
  • Structured way of working with a high degree of proactivity and responsibility. Good team skills, self-reliance and ability to work under pressure.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English, basic knowledge of German.


The position is initially for 5 years. As part of the FAIR project, there are good prospects for a longer-term career. Salary is as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
