Accelerator Physicist (m/f) for System Planning

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The department “System Design” within the subproject “SIS100/SIS18” is responsible for design and development as well as control of the heavy ion synchrotrons in the GSI and FAIR facilities. For this department we are seeking as early as possible an

 

Accelerator Physicist (m/f) for System Planning

You’re contributing at the system level to assuring the proper functioning and to the optimization of the two synchrotrons SIS18 and SIS100.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assure consistency of the physical parameters of SIS100 with its technical layout during the ongoing design and procurement phase.
  • Coordinate the design of critical components of SIS100 and their integration into the accelerator’s layout.
  • Coordinate and execute measures to assure compatibility of all components of SIS100 with the physical design of the accelerator.
  • Analyse the impact of unavoidable non-conformities of components on the proper functioning of SIS100 and define appropriate countermeasures.
  • Prepare and establish procedures for commissioning of SIS100.
  • Participate in the coordination and survey of measures assuring the proper functioning of SIS100 during the construction and commissioning phase.
  • Support and substitute the work package leader “System Design SIS100” regarding his project planning tasks.
  • Develop and coordinate measures for the optimization of SIS18 in collaboration with the machine coordinator and technical departments.
  • Manage projects for upgrading SIS18 in collaboration with national and international external partners.
  • Support operation of the synchrotrons SIS18 and SIS100 by participating in on-call duty.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • PhD or equivalent relevant experience in physics, engineering or a related field.
  • Considerable knowledge and demonstrated experience in accelerator physics and accelerator technologies.
  • Extensive technical know-how and experience in planning and coordination of projects for the construction of complex technical systems.
  • Ideally, experience in design and construction of accelerators or accelerator components.
  • Ideally, experience with software for the simulation of accelerators and common CAD tools.
  • Structured and organized way of working, ability to work to deadlines, as well as commitment to advance projects independently and responsibly.
  • Ability to work in a team, convincing others by effective communication and coherent argumentation, taking an active role if required
  • Business fluent English, very good command of German.

 

The position is initially limited to 5 years. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
