GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensuring each day to conduct world-class science.


The department "Vacuum Systems" (VAC) is responsible for the supervision, maintenance and operation of all accelerator vacuum systems of the existing GSI facility. This includes, among other things, the maintenance of facilities for controlling the vacuum system.

Furthermore, within the international FAIR project, the department is responsible for the vacuum-technical layout of the future accelerator facility. For this purpose, a new industrial based vacuum control system is being developed together with international partners.

To support the existing vacuum systems, to further develop the controls of the existing vacuum systems and the development within the framework of FAIR, we are looking for the reinforcement of our team as soon as possible:

Your tasks are:

  • Supervision and monitoring of vacuum systems at the GSI and FAIR accelerator facilities
  • Planning, development, design and construction of the vacuum control system for FAIR
  • Maintenance, fault analysis, optimization and documentation of the existing vacuum system and controls
  • Installation and configuration of special mechanical and electrical technical equipment


Your profile:

  • Several years of experience in the maintenance of mechanical and electronic equipment
  • Very good knowledge of industrial control technology (PLC)
  • Very good experience and knowledge in the development and maintenance of analogue and digital circuit technology
  • Be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, with a high degree of initiative and responsibility, highly organized and very good teamwork skills
  • Team spirit and flexibility
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English 
  • Basic knowledge of vacuum technology
  • Knowledge in EPLAN Electric is desirable
  • Knowledge in project management tools (e.g. MS Project) is desired
  • General computer skills, preferably MS Office are desired
  • Willingness to participate in the existing on-call duties


Your tasks will place high demands on conceptual skills. The necessary close cooperation with other professional groups requires good teamwork and communication skills as well as a structured and precise approach.

The position is permanent. The salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
