The Helmholtz Institut Mainz (HIM) is a physics research institute jointly funded by the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU). HIM's research focuses on the structure, symmetry and stability of matter and antimatter. GSI is a research institution supported by the federal government and the states of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia and is a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centerrs.

Research Associate for Experimental Atomic and Nuclear Physics (m/f)

Your responsibilities:

  • participation in mass measurements with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP
  • methodical and technical developments to increase efficiency, sensitivity and accuracy in mass spectrometry of radionuclides
  • active participation in the research programme of the SHE Physics Section in the field of the heaviest elements
  • Supervision of bachelor and master students as well as doctoral students


 Your qualifications:

  • a PhD in Experimental Atomic or Nuclear Physics
  • Relevant professional experience and very good knowledge in the field of Penning trap mass spectrometry, ideally with radionuclides.
  • ideally professional experience in the field of SHE research
  • good knowledge of electronics, data acquisition and control systems are desirable
  • good communication skills and a good command of spoken and written English


The location is the GSI Helmholtz Institute Centre Mainz in MainzDarmstadt.

The position is initially limited to 2 years. The salary is based on the GSI collective agreement TVöD (federal government).
