The international accelerator center FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, is currently being built in Darmstadt. FAIR is under construction at the existing research center GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. At FAIR, matter that usually only exists in the depth of space will be produced and studied in the laboratory, in order to gain new insights into the evolution of the universe and the structure of matter. Transferring the scientific insights of FAIR research into broader society is the goal of FAIR's future outreach activities. The main target groups are pupils and students. For this purpose, the new position of Educational Scientific Outreach Officer (d/m/w) will be created at FAIR. The main task of the position is the development of a sustainable concept of outreach activities as well as the preparation of content for educational teaching and formats of FAIR science for schools and universities. This concept should be implemented within the new Joint Outreach Office (JOO), which is to be jointly lead with an Outreach Officer employed through German university groups (via ErUM-FSPs@FAIR). For that cooperative teamwork is of pivotal importance within the JOO, but also with the scientists at GSI/FAIR, from the German universities and the international scientific community.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing a concept and realization a strategy for educational outreach of FAIR science for the main target group of pupils and students.
  • Developing the content for educational outreach.
  • Developing a feasible concept and contents for a school/student lab on GSI/FAIR premises as one possible main educational outreach activity.
  • Realisation of the school/student lab after approval of feasibility.
  • Developing collaborations and communication with FAIR partner institutions, universities and researchers.
  • Preparation, follow-up and evaluation of outreach activities.
  • Applying for the third party funding for outreach activities.


Your profile:

  • PhD degree in natural scientific or comparable qualification, with a scientific-technical specialization.
  • Enthusiasm for the scientific topics, which will be addressed at FAIR, and the capability to disseminate those in a comprehensible and exiting fashion to non-expert audiences.
  • Experience in teaching, science communication and event management is an advantage.
  • Good organizational and project management skills.
  • Experiences in applying for third party funding is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Office applications; experience with desktop publishing software as well as editing websites.
  • Practiced in the use of social media, digital communication formats and multimedia content.
  • Ability to work in a targeted, flexible and timely manner, even under pressure of time.
  • Ability to cooperate, diplomatic skills, friendly and personable appearance.
  • Very good written expression skills and orthographic confidence in the German language.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
