Post-doctoral researcher in “Theoretical Nuclear Astrophysics” (d/f/m)

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

For our Theory department, we are looking for a

Post-doctoral researcher in
“Theoretical Nuclear Astrophysics” (d/f/m)

Posting ID:  1840-20.51

as part of the ERC advanced grant “KILONOVA”.

The successful candidate will work on the development of microscopic calculations of beta-decay and/or fission rates for r-process nuclei. The main goal is to improve the nuclear physics input for r-process nucleosynthesis models of neutron star mergers to provide accurate yield predictions and the associated kilonova emission. The project offers collaborative work with other groups at GSI, neighboring universities, and other institutes worldwide.

Requirements:

The candidate should have a PhD in physics and research experience in the physics of exotic neutron-rich nuclei with applications in nuclear astrophysics. The candidate should have a profound background in nuclear astrophysics and in particular in the role of nuclear physics in nucleosynthesis. Excellent skills in programming, scientific and high-performance computing are essential. Experience with nucleosynthesis networks is highly desirable.

We offer:

The position is initially offered for 2 years with further extensions possible depending on performance. The earliest starting date is January 1st, 2021. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
