"The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) Project"
The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics facility (ELI-NP) to be constructed in Bucharest-Magurele will be one of the three pillars of ELI and will consist of two components: a very high power (2x10PW) laser beam and a very intense (1013 γ/s), brilliant γ beam, 0.1% bandwidth, with Eγ = 19 MeV.
ELI-NP will allow either combined experiments between the high-power laser and the γ beam or stand-alone experiments. This facility will create a new European laboratory with a broad range of science covering frontier fundamental physics, new nuclear physics and astrophysics as well as applications.
A review of the Project and the Status of its implementation will be presented.

Matthias Lochmann, GSI und Univ. Mainz:
"Laser spectroscopy of the Hyperfine Structure of H-like and Li-like 209Bi at the ESR"
Measurements of ground state HFS in H-like heavy ions provide a tool to test QED in extreme electromagnetic fields. Up to now, the uncertainty of the level splitting due to the distribution of the magnetic moment in the core (Bohr-Weisskopf-effect) hampered a direct test from existing experimental data of H-like systems as obtained.. Comparing the HFS of H-like and Li-like ions of the same nuclide, one can to a large extent eliminate the contribution of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. Bismuth is one of the very few cases were the ground state HFS transition of both ions, H-like and Li-like, are in a range accessible for laser spectroscopy.
After 12 years and three unsuccessful attempts, we finally succeeded in observing the hyperfine structure (HFS) transition in Li-like 209Bi80+. The experimental setup and its key improvements, as well as the state of the data analysis are presented. An outlook to further experiments to improve the accuracy of the energy splitting will be given as well.
