Physics programme

This CNI project comprises four aspects of FAIR:
  • SIS18 upgrade
    The upgrade of the existing synchrotron SIS18 will lead to a factor of up to 50 higher intensities (for both primary and secondary beams) compared to the present capabilities. The benefit will be twofold: The medium-term research program (until 2010) on nuclei far from stability and hadron physics exploiting secondary pion beams will profit from the intensity gain. And the upgrade will render the transformation of SIS18 into an injector into the future double-synchrotron SIS100/300 possible;
  • HADES upgrade
    The HADES (High Acceptance Di-electron Spectrometer) upgrade is a prerequisite for higher ion beam energies at SIS100. The increase in secondary pion beam intensities and the upgrade of the HADES detector with regard to particle identification, data acquisition and trigger systems, will allow for high resolution invariant mass spectroscopy and excitation function measurements in ion and pion induced reactions;
  • R3B magnet
    The R3B upgrade will pave the ground for complete kinematics studies of break-up reactions of exotic nuclei. To fully exploit the intensity upgrade of SIS18, in particular by extending the studies from light to medium-heavy and heavy exotic nuclei, a superconducting large acceptance dipole magnet with 5 Tm bending power has to be constructed. After completion of SIS100 and the Super-FRS, the new R3B setup will be moved to the future facility;
  • overall construction
    This work package comprises all other activities which are carried out in the prepatory and construction phase for the whole FAIR project.
