04.05.2012 Mourning for Hans Otto Schuff
GSI mourns Hans Otto Schuff (* 23.1.1930, 15.4.2012). Hans Otto Schuff was one of the founding fathers of GSI and its first
administrative director from 1969 to 1992. During his long tenure that ranged from the preparation and construction of the UNILAC accelerator,
the founding of GSI to the start of the experimental program at the heavy ion synchrotron SIS 18 and the experimental storage ring ESR, Schuff
formed and gave distinction to the fate and development of our institute. GSI's employees bow to his achievements in life and will keep his memory in great honor.

26.04.2012 Girls' Day today at GSI
30 girls are given the opportunity today, April 26, to spend the day at GSI in the framework of the "Girls' Day". Following an introductory
talk and a guided tour through the facility they are coached by employees of different departments. They can gain practical insight into
the electronics and the mechanics workshops, the research departments like biophysics or plasmaphysics or work in magnet technology, the
engineering office or at the accelerators. The nationwide special day allows girls to explore professions in technology, IT, crafts and
natural sciences.
25.04.2012 Sascha Vogel wins Science Slam
Not only love stories in Hollywood movies are unrealistic, also the construction of a particle accelerator in "Iron Man 2". Dr. Sascha Vogel
reveals physical mistakes in movies and wins the Special Science Slam of the LOEWE-program.
In "Iron Man 2" main character Robert Downey Jr. assembles a particle accelerator all alone in just one afternoon - of course in a sexy
muscle shirt. "At our place it looks like this to build an accelerator!" explains Sascha Vogel to his audience in the Centralstation Darmstadt on April 24, 2012.
And he shows the picture of a person in a special working suit. Just one example of how Hollywood overrules physical laws. As it is common
in a science slam, Sascha Vogel presents an up-to-date topic of research briefly, comprehensibly and entertainingly. He is a theoretical
physicist at HIC for FAIR and supervises PhD-students of the graduate school HGS-HIRe.
At the Special Science Slam of the Hessian Ministry for Science and Arts he won against 8 competitors. The topics of the talks ranged from
IT-security, the question "Who wants to taste their own urine?" up to biodiversity. (Foto: HMWK)
24.04.2012 Humboldt Award Winner Isao Tanihata at GSI
Professor Isa Tanihata recieved the research award of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation for his excellent research in the field of
nuclear phyiscs. His experimental work covers nuclear physics, astrophysics and reactions and applications of exotic beams. Tanihata is
a professor at the Osaka University, Japan, and the Beihang University, China. In the context of the Humboldt award he plans several
research visits to GSI to experiment at the FRS and study the tensor interaction and the charge radii of nuclei with very few neutrons. The
development of a suitable detection system is currently conducted in cooperation with Professor Christoph Scheidenberger at GSI.
12.04.2012 GSI receives German Award for Computer Centers
The new high performance computer center "MiniCube" of GSI received the "German Award for Computer Centers 2012" for its energy and cost saving concept.
Awarded was the innovative cooling and air conditioning technology that preserves the environment and also saves investment and operation costs. The prize
is awarded annually by an independent jury at the symposium "future thinking" in Sinsheim, Germany.

27. March 2012 Scientists of the ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI win Helmholtz Award for Precision Measurements
Sven Sturm, Anke Wagner and Klaus Blaum from the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in
Heidelberg and the Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz receive the Helmholtz Award for Precision Measurements endowed with 20.000 Euro.
The three scientists are awarded this major prize for metrology for their measurements with hydrogen-like ions. The work was conducted
in the framework of the ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI, the Helmholtz Allicance "Cosmic Matter in the Laboratory" and the Helmholtz Young
Investigators Group "Precision Experiments with Stored and Cooled Ions" which are hosted by GSI and the university in Mainz.

19. March 2012 GSI-Magazine "target" Issue 7 published
In issue no. 7 of our GSI-magazine "target" we cover the start of the construction works for our new facility FAIR and the arrival of the
first magnet for the super fragment separator belonging to the new facility. Furthermore you get to know how we improve tumour therapy with
a puppet and why you have to wear special clothing when entering our new detector laboratory.

6. March 2012 Masterclass for high school students at GSI
30 high school students
were invited to GSI on Tuesday, March 6, to evaluate recent measurement data gained from the ALICE experiment at the collider LHC in Geneva.
Following introductory talks and a visit of the GSI experiment HADES the participants analyzed real data from proton-proton- and lead-lead-collisions
with original software. Afterwards they discussed their results in English in a video conference with participants from other institutes.
The event was organised in the framework of the International Masterclasses for High School Students, a world-wide program with more than
130 participating research institutes in 28 countries.
29. February 2012 Why and how does therapy with radon work? New research project funded with three million Euro
In a new research project lead-managed by GSI the anti-inflammatory therapeutic properties and the risks of a therapy with radon will
be studied. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds the project Grewis (Genetische Risiken und entzündungshemmende
Wirkung von ionisierender Strahlung, meaning genetical risks and anti-inflammatory properties
of ionizing radiation) with three million Euro in the next 3,5 years. Research partners of GSI are the technical university in Darmstadt,
the universities of Erlangen and Frankfurt and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. To the press release (German)
23. February 2012 113 superconducting high-tech magnets for the accelerator facility FAIR
GSI has placed an order with Babcock Noell GmbH for the manufacture and supply of 113 superconducting high-tech magnets for the accelerator facility FAIR. The magnets, each of which weighs more than a ton, are required for the central ring accelerator SIS100, the heart of the FAIR facility. This ring accelerator will accelerate charged particles to almost the speed of light for the various experiments at FAIR. The magnets that have been ordered will keep the ions on a circular path. Babcock Noell will set up a production line to manufacture the magnets and the superconducting cable at its Würzburg location. (Foto: Babcock Noell GmbH) To the press release
09. February 2012 Girls' Day with GSI
This year GSI will again participate in the Girls' Day activities. This nationwide special day allows girls to explore professions in technology, IT,
crafts and natural sciences. The date is 26. April. Further information on the Girls' Day-website (German)
27. January 2012 Preparations for Construction of New FAIR Accelerator Setup of Construction Road in Wixhausen
On 2. February 2012 the setup of a construction road will begin in Darmstadt-Wixhausen. The works will prepare the establishment of the
