Chemistry of Hassium First Chemical Study of Element 108
An international team of scientists from
China, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the USA succeeded in investigating chemical
properties of element hassium with the atomic number Z=108. With only seven identified
hassium atoms, the researchers could demonstrate that hassium behaves like a typical
member of group 8 (Fe, Ru, Os) of the periodic table.

Nuclear Matter - Is It Soft Rather Than Hard?
Physicists of the KAOS Collaboration at
GSI have measured kaon (K+) and pion production yields in nuclear collisions of
Au on Au and C on C at energies between 0.6 and 1.5 AGeV. The kaon multiplicities
per nucleon are enhanced by factors of up to 6 for Au+Au as compared to C+C collisions.
The relative enhancement increases with decreasing energy. This behavior is expected
for a soft equation-of-state for nuclear matter.

GSI Presents Conceptual Design Report for a Future
International Accelerator Facility
In November 2001, GSI published the Conceptual
Design Report (CDR) for a future "International Accelerator Facility for
Beams of Ions and Antiprotons" . A volume of 700 pages, the CDR is based
on a broad spectrum of workshops, working group reports and general discussions,
organized by GSI and by the user communities over a period of several years.
