Cover Picture:

The cover page shows Schottky-noise frequency spectra from an experiment, where the beta decay of bare 207Tl ions into bound states of the released electron was directly observed. This process plays a role in stellar interiors at high temperatures such as red giants or AGB stars during the s-process nucleosynthesis and may significantly affect the decay properties and in particular the half-lives of nuclei. The 207Tl ions were produced in a proton-stripping reaction from 208Pb, separated as isotopically pure beams by the FRS, and injected into the ESR, where they were first stochastically and then electron-cooled and their decay was continuously observed. The first spectrum (4 seconds after injection) shows a broad and flat, almost structureless distribution of the hot fragments. Stochastic pre-cooling yields a clear peak structure (6s) and is the prerequisite for fast electron cooling, which is completed only two seconds later (8s). This scheme combines the advantages of both cooling schemes: it enables the observation of the short-lived isomeric state in 207Tl (1,33s half-life in the neutral atom) and provides sufficiently high resolution to observe separated peaks for the isomeric and ground state in 207Tl81+ and the bound-state beta-decay daughter 207Pb81+. The decay is observed for 2000s.
