Cover Picture:

Deeply-bound pionic states of heavy atoms were discovered by a japanese-german group at the fragment separator FRS. Recently, this new spectroscopic tool was applied to study the 1s pionic state in a series of Sn isotopes. Well-resolved peaks of the pionic 1s states were observed and their binding energies and widths were precisely determined. These measurements will reveal how the pion mass as well as the pion decay constant are modified in nuclear media due to quantum chromodynamics effects.
The front cover shows the measured spectra, calculated interaction potentials and a close-up view of the FRS target ladder with the used thin stripes of Sn targets carefully prepared by the GSI target laboratory for this high-resolution experiment.
