High Energy Density Physics
with Intense Ion and Laser Beams: Annual Report 2006 (GSI
Report 2007-2)

Cover
illustration: The
front cover shows a remarkable example of science and art
complementing each other in some harmony. The drawing constituting
the center part has been created by Claudia V. Meister, who
was a guest scientist at GSI-Plasmaphysics department last year in
December. There were only few leisure hours during this busy stay,
but she used them to record her impressions of GSI. The
photographs framing this drawing show the recently developed gold
hohlraum targets for conversion of laser radiation into x-rays. In
the picture on the upper left and lower right side one can see the
larger entrance hole for the laser beam and the smaller diagnostic
hole for analyzing the created x-rays. The picture on the lower
left and upper right side are views on one hole through another
hole: here the small diagnostic hole is seen through the large
beam entrance hole. The diameter of the target is 750µm
with entrance holes of 300µm and 125µm
respectively.
Curriculum
Vitae of Claudia Veronika Meister: In 1967, being 14 years
old, the artist-autodidact Claudia-Veronika Meister started her
career in the Glauchau school of fine arts by the drawing master,
painter and graphic artist Johannes Feige. As student of the
special mathematical class at the Martin-Luther University
Halle-Wittenberg 1969-1971, she took also part in evening drawing
and painting courses of the university by the painter and graphic
artist Prof. Ullrich Bewersdorff. C.-V. Meister paints in
water-colour, gouache and oil. She makes woodcuts and lithographic
prints. Her works concern flowers, animals, landscapes, portraits
and illustrations of scientific, especially physical, phenomena.
Since 1968, she takes part in exhibitions of the Glauchau school
of fine art. Besides, she organized personal exhibitions, so in
Strasbourg (1999), Opole (since 2006) and Potsdam (since 2006).
Since 2003, she wrote many popular-scientific articles which she
illustrated with graphics and paintings. In 2006, she initiated in
Potsdam an own evening and a weekend drawing course. Besides, she
gives fine arts lectures at the Berlin-Brandenburg Foreigners
Academy.
