Cover illustration:

The image on the left side shows the interference pattern generated by a Wollaston interferometer probing a laser produced plasma. In the lower  part (located between the dark blue bars) the target foil can be seen while the laser beam impacts from the top (see also contribution on page 1, A Pelka et al.).  The energy of the beam is 50 J and generates a plasma of approximately 3  mm size. The deformation of the stripes allows the computation of the electron density which leads to the distribution shown on the right side.  In this experiment the maximum electron density which could be resolved was 3*1019 cm-3. Both images are of the same scale and horizontally aligned.
