The cover picture shows the light emission of a high power electron beam (coming from
the right side) in a background gas. The beam is bent in the analyzing magnetic field of a
pair of Helmholtz coils and obviously has a narrow energy distribution. The schematic
set-up is shown in the insert.
The beam characteristics in terms of current and electron energy are shown in the two
overlaid graphs. After triggering (t = 0) the beam has 5 keV electron energy and a low
current (< 30 A) while the electron energy drops to about 2 keV and the current increases
up to 1 kA after 700 ns. The background picture shows the beam at t = 500 ns.
The source will serve for neutralization experiments using a low energy ion beam from a
laser ion source. With a power exceeding 2 MW it can also serve as a calibration source
for x-ray detectors. Details of the source are discussed on page 23.
