Using Thunderbird's e-mail client with Exchange 2003
This guide shows how to configure Thunderbird's e-mail client under Windows in order to connect to the Exchange 2003 Server (Exchange 2010 Server)*. Furthermore, the import of the GSI SSL certificate, the creation of an additional mailbox and the import of the GSI address book is explained. Linux users find help in First steps with Linux (PDF).
(* in brackets the data for the mailserver Exchange 2010 Server)
From the menu choose Tools → Account Settings → Your Account, e.g. username@gsi.de
Server Settings: Incoming e-mails
Mark Server Settings on the left and enter the following information: "imap.gsi.de" (imap2010.gsi.de)* in Server Name, your Windows user name in User Name, choose the port number "993". In Security Settings choose "SSL/TLS" as Connection security and "Normal password" as Authentication method. It is very important that the Local directory path entry points to a folder in the area of your local hard drive which is provided for user data. On GSI standard computers it is usually "User Data (F:)". To choose a folder for Thunderbird, click the button Browse. Should there be no appropriate folder, you can create a new one at this point, for example, F:\Thunderbird, select it and press OK.

Check the tab Your Certificates weather the "Deutsche Telekom" certificate is already installed. If this is not the case, download "Sicherheitszertifikat GSI CA 02" to your local hard drive. Then use tab Authorities to select "Deutsche Telekom Root CA 2" and import the downloaded file from your computer.

When the window Edit CA certificate trust settings pops up, mark "This certificate can identify web sites" and "This certificate can identify mail users".

When you open Thunderbird for the first time, you are prompted for a password, which is the same as for Windows.
To add another mailbox, go to Tools → Account Settings. In the pull down menu Account Actions down on the left choose Add Mail Account.

Enter your name as you would like it to be shown to others, your Email address and your password.

In your Account settings, you can now view both of your Email accounts and if necessary manage.

This address book only works inside GSI. From the menu choose Tools → Address book. Than choose again from the main menu File → New → LDAP Directory. Enter the following information in the Address book window: In Hostname type "windc02.campus.gsi.de", in BasisDN "ou=gsiusers,dc=campus,dc=gsi,dc=de", in Port nummer "3268" and in Bind DN your Windows user name.

Click OK.
