Diamond Bunch-Length Monitors

Highly charged ions will be accelerated in the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS, stripped in a foil to the desired charge state and injected into the storage ring ESR. In the ESR the ions will be decelerated to an energy of 3 MeV/u. They will then be extracted in a fast-extraction mode as short ion bunches, and subsequently decelerated and cooled to helium temperatures in Penning traps. For the commissioning of HITRAP Diamond Bunch-Length Monitorsmade of polycrystalline as well as of single-crystal CVD diamond samples have been developed and probed.

For more information on this issue and more diamond applications considered for Atomic Physics experiments, see the presentation: Diamonds for HITRAP and for Future Electron Spectroscopy" given by C. Kozhuharov during the 4th NoRHDia Workshop at GSI.
