Application Procedure for PHELIX Beamtime

Proposals for beamtime with PHELIX laser and/or ion beam are evaluated by the PHELIX and Plasmaphysics Program Advisory Committee (PPAC), consisting of predominantly external members. For more details on the composition of the committee see the website PPAC.

Applications from Institutes of non-EU States: For the application a webform has to be submitted along with a description of the scientific justification and a technical description. For the webform see here: How to apply for beam / Procedure to Apply for Beam Time.

Applications from Institutes of EU-Member States: All applications from institutes in EU countries for PHELIX beamtime should be submitted through Laserlab Europe. Proposals can be submitted online following instructions on the website of Laserlab Europe: Proposal Submission.

Performance of PHELIX

PHELIX is available for experiments at the Z6 target station of the UNILAC heavy-ion accelerator and in the PHELIX hall. Pulses of up to 500 J with duration between 1 and 10 nanosecond can be delivered at the Z6 experimental area, synchronized with heavy-ion pulses up to 11 MeV/u.
In the laser hall pulses compressed to 500 fs are obtainable at energies up to 200 J. Longer pulse durations up to a few ps can be provided, too. Double pulses with a spacing of 100 ps to 2 ns can be delivered. At this location some limitations on space and the maximum focused intensity (radiation protection) have to be considered.

For more information on PHELIX please consult the GSI webpage PHELIX.
