Introduction

The Kernphysik II division at GSI-Darmstadt and the IONAS group at the University of Giessen is concerned with the study of exotic nuclei at relativistic energies and applications to nuclear astrophysics. This is accomplished through an experimental programme at the Fragment Separator FRS, where exotic nuclei are produced and studied at various experimental areas with dedicated instrumentation.

Present main activities are gamma-ray spectroscopy, reaction studies, accurate mass measurements, decay studies of highly-charged ions and experiments on mesons bound to nuclei. The department has pioneered a nuclear physics programme with exotic nuclei stored in the Experimental Storage Ring ESR and presently designs and develops the Super-FRS and its experimental programme at FAIR.
