The GSI Exotic Nuclei Community was founded at the symposium in honour of Gottfried Münzenberg at the occasion of celebrating his 60th birthday on July 11, 2000. The main goal of this community is to reward young scientists for outstanding research in nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and closely related fields. President of the GSI Exotic Nuclei Community is Prof. G. Münzenberg (GSI).

The first members of the GSI Exotic Nuclei Community were nominated at the above mententioned symposium and they form the "seed" for the extension of this scientific society.

We want to present to outstanding young scientists our award which consists of the membership and a prize. The idea is mainly to strengthen and motivate the young generation of scientists in our field. In this context "young" implies only that such candidates are eligible by our international jury who have passed their doctoral examination less than 5 years before they were nominated. The jury consists of GENCO members from different countries. Presently, this committee has the following members: Prof. H. Geissel (GSI), Prof. B. Jonson (Sweden), Prof. A. C. Mueller (France), Dr. M. Schaedel (GSI), Prof. B. Sherrill (USA) and Prof. I. Tanihata (Japan). The award ceremony will be held annualy during the NUSTAR / FRS annual meeting at GSI.

Besides the award for young scientists, each year also senior scientists will be elected for the membership. This honour is presented through a special certificate. This membership award has no age limitation. The number of candidates for these nominations was not strictly limited for the first years to establish a broad base of competent members. From the annual meeting in 2006 on only three additional membership awards will be presented.

Our community has also a social aspect, namely to meet at big international conference in one of the evenings and discuss topics of comon interest. These topics will mainly be science related but do not exclude private aspects, e.g., to give our children an opportunity to visit a member family in another country.
