Prof. Marco Durante, director of the Biophysics Department, has been awarded the 2010 Nikolaj Vladimirovich Timofeeff-Ressovsky Medal by the Russian Academy of Sciences. The medal will be presented to Prof. Durante during the next N.W. Timofeeff-Ressovsky Conference in Crimea, 9-14 October 2010.

N.W. Timofeeff-Ressovsky (1900-1981) is one of the fathers of radiation biology. He studied in Russia and worked many years in Germany at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Hirnforschung. In 1935, Timofeeff-Ressovsky published the major work, über die Natur der Genmutation und der Genstruktur (known as the “green paper”) with Karl Zimmer, and Max Delbrück; it was considered to be a major advance in understanding the nature of gene mutation and gene structure. The work was a keystone in the formation of molecular genetics. After WWII he went back to Russia, where he organized and became the head of the Department of Radiobiology and Genetics, at the Institute of Medical Radiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. The Medal “Biosphere and Humanity” in the name of N.V.Timofeeff-Ressovsky was created in the year 2000 by the Scientific Council of the Medical Radiological Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (MRRC of RAMS) and the N.V.Timofeeff-Ressovsky Scientific Society “Biosphere and Humanity”.
