The High-Energy Irradiation Facility Cave A

Since 1991 this facility is used by international research groups for irradiation experiments in the fields

  • Radiation biology
  • Physical-technical investigations related to heavy-ion therapy
  • Space research
  • Materials research
Ion beams and energy range:
  • Ion beams: many ion species from protons to uranium
  • Energy range:  50 – 2000 A MeV   (max. 18 Tm)
  • Particle fluence:  < 10 up to 1012 ions/cm2

Beam delivery system:
  • Rasterscan-system intensity-controlled
  • Max. fieldsize  20 x 20 cm2
  • Excellent homogeneity for large-area irradiations
  • On-line monitor to control irradiation
Sample handling:
  • Robot arm for biological samples
  • Linear tables remote controlled
  • LASER and optical alignment systems
  • TV systems with remote control
