Biophysics Experiments at FAIR

The planned extension of the accelerator facility for the FAIR-project will allow an extension of the biophysics experiments to energies up to 10 GeV/u. This is of particular interest for investigations of the physical and radiobiological properties of solar and galactic cosmic rays. The precise knowledge of these properties is essential for optimization of shielding measures for space missions. In addition, radiation detectors used during space flights can be calibrated at this facility.

In cooperation with the Materials Research group it is planned to establish a new irradiation facility at the FAIR accelerator complex. Based on the raster scan technique, the homogenous irradiation of large fields with extreme precision and homogeneity will be possible. The construction of the BIOMAT facility for biophysics and materials research is supported by an international collaboration of approx. 30 groups. A more detailed description can be found in the Letter of Intent.
