Open Position in Atomic Physics at the ExtreMe Matter Institute (EMMI)
The ExtreMe Matter Institute (EMMI) at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung
invites applications for a position as a research assistant (PhD studentship) in the EMMI
atomic physics Fellow Group of Dr. Alexandre Gumberidze.
The successful candidate is expected to join experimental activities on studies of the
structure and dynamics of highly-charged ions. For the case of atomic structure studies,
particular emphasis is given to the experiments on bound state Quantum Electrodynamics (QED)
effects for one- and few-electron heavy ions. Complementary to the structure, the dynamics
of ion-matter interaction in the high-Z domain gives access to fundamental electromagnetic
interaction processes which are strongly affected by the virtual photon fields of the
rapidly moving projectile . In addition, these studies will have a strong link with the
plasma physics branch of EMMI. In particular, joint experiments dedicated to the
understanding of the processes ongoing in extreme states of matter (i.e intense Laser
produced plasmas), are planned.
A sound background in atomic physics as well as in programming is desirable.
The position is limited to 3 years.
