EMMI Workshops and EMMI Programs

Call for Proposals

The ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI at GSI was founded in April 2008 in the framework of the Helmholtz Alliance 'Cosmic Matter in the Laboratory'. Together with its 13 partner institutions it aims at fostering forefront research on matter under extreme conditions of temperature, pressure or density. The four main research areas of EMMI are

• properties of the quark-gluon plasma and the phase structure of strongly interacting matter
• structure and dynamics of neutron matter
• electromagnetic plasmas of high energy density
• ultra-cold quantum gases and extreme states in atomic physics,

all understood in a broad sense. The key idea is to conduct this research in an interdisciplinary framework, based upon common underlying concepts for the theoretical and phenomenological understanding of the physical phenomena in the four areas.

A central activity of EMMI is to support, to organize and to host workshops and research programs on topical and interdisciplinary subjects in the area of matter under extreme conditions.

EMMI encourages in particular the active participation of young scientists (students and young postdocs) in EMMI workshops and programs. They should get ample opportunity to present their work in talks and/or posters.

We invite proposals for EMMI workshops and EMMI research programs. All active researchers working in the area of extreme matter are entitled to submit proposals.

EMMI workshops
EMMI workshops can take place at GSI as well as at other suitable venues. They can last for up to a week. EMMI can grant a support of up to 20 kEURO for EMMI workshops. We can support of the order of 10 workshops per year.

EMMI programs
EMMI programs usually take place at GSI and last for four weeks. Each program should address at least two of the four key research subjects of EMMI. The main aim of EMMI programs is to foster informal discussion and to initiate new collaborations, especially on an interdisciplinary basis. Only few talks are permitted (about one per day), while plenty of time should be allocated for informal discussions and collaboration among the participants. For that we consider it essential that each participant stays for a minimum of two weeks. We recommend to organize a program together with a corresponding workshop that should take place during the program.
Depending on the the subject areas involved and other circumstances EMMI can grant up to several tens of kEURO for EMMI programs. We plan to have one or two programs per year.

Collaboration meetings
Collaboration meetings can be supported by EMMI. They should last for at most three days and should involve maximally 40 participants. EMMI can support such meetings with up to 7 kEURO.

Schools
In general, schools can be supported by EMMI. Please contact us in order to inquire about possible support for organizing a school.

All proposals will be evaluated by the EMMI Program Advisory Committee (PAC). It makes recommendations to the Scientific Director of EMMI who takes the final decision about the proposals. Selection criteria include intellectual excellence, relevance for the EMMI research areas, interdisciplinarity among these areas, timeliness, availability of outstanding participants, and potential for promoting young scientists.

The PAC meets twice a year, usually at the end of April and at the beginning of November. The strict deadlines for submission of proposals are 10th of April and 10th of October for the corresponding meeting of the PAC. Proposals arriving later will in general be postponed to the following meeting. The workshop or program can take place four month after the submission deadline at the earliest.

In very exceptional cases workshops and collaboration meetings can also be organized on a shorter timescale. (This applies only to workshops in emerging research fields with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity. For workshops or collaboration meetings to be organized on a short timescale it must be obvious that the subject requires an urgent discussion.) In such a case please contact us before submitting a proposal.
