Modeling
Intense beams represent a very complex many-body Coulomb problem.
The GSI beam physics group is reducing this complexity in the form of
simplified models, that still contain some of the essential collective
mechanisms. Examples are the successfull modeling of space charge waves
(transverse and longitudinal), of collective beam instabilities and of the
crystallization in ultra-cold beams. The modeling is the first step towards
a numerical solution or, if possible, towards an analytical treatment.
